OpenAI Expands Data Collection Scope with Google
OpenAI has introduced a "Computer History" feature in its ChatGPT for Mac that references computer usage history, while Google has stated that it can utilize content from its search services to improve generative AI models. The data collection scope of AI companies is expanding beyond chat windows to include computer operation history, uploaded content, and search activities. OpenAI's feature must be activated by the user, who can also exclude or delete records from specific apps and sites. Google explains that through "Search Services History," it can store various data such as search terms, search results, and AI model responses in Google accounts, which can be used for service improvement and AI model training. This data is kept separate from Google accounts for up to four years, and users can turn it off or delete it. The difference between the two companies is that OpenAI's feature is off by default and must be turned on by the user, while Google's structure is set to save automatically. Meta is also reflecting AI interactions in its advertising and recommendation systems, planning to utilize user interaction data for personalization starting December 16, 2025. These changes indicate that the competition in AI services is shifting from "chatbots that answer questions" to "personalized systems that remember user context."
