Amazon Defaults to Using Twitch Content for AI Training
Twitch has adjusted its content usage settings, allowing its parent company Amazon to default to using creators' live stream recordings for training generative AI models unless users opt out. This move has sparked backlash from the streaming community, with controversy centered around the default consent and content authorization methods. Twitch has added settings that allow users to choose not to have their channel content used for AI training; if users do not manually disable the relevant options, their content will automatically enter the training process. Twitch's Chief Product Officer Mike Minton stated that if the system were changed to "opt-in," almost no one would choose to participate, further exacerbating community dissatisfaction. Creators are concerned that their long-term live-streamed audio and video content could be used to train AI without their knowledge, especially for streamers who rely on live streaming for monetization, as this content contains a significant amount of personal voice, visuals, and interaction information. Twitch acknowledges that the community is cautious about generative AI and emphasizes the provision of an opt-out option, rather than directly stating that Amazon will use this content to train models. Twitch executives mentioned that platforms like Meta also use publicly available content to train AI, believing that providing an opt-out mechanism is a response to community feedback, but this has not quelled the controversy. Minton also noted that he could not confirm whether Amazon had previously used this content to train models, which has left some users even more concerned about whether their content had already entered the training data pool.
