AI Infrastructure Commitments Reach $2.6 Trillion, Big Tech Faces Long-Term Burden
Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle, among other major cloud companies, have accumulated long-term spending commitments related to AI infrastructure totaling $2.6 trillion (approximately 3,684 trillion won). The increase in data center leases and equipment and service purchase contracts is expanding AI investments into long-term capital burdens. Market analysis firm Cowen & Company has stated that these hyperscalers will incur data center lease fees and equipment and service purchase payments of this magnitude in the future. Alphabet's commitment amounts to $896 billion (approximately 1,270 trillion won), with purchase commitments of $811 billion (approximately 1,149 trillion won) and data center lease obligations of $85 billion (approximately 120 trillion won). Oracle has purchase commitments of $32 billion (approximately 45 trillion won) and data center lease commitments of $260 billion (approximately 368 trillion won), resulting in a combined future capital obligation of $292 billion (approximately 414 trillion won). FactSet Insight predicts that these companies' combined capital expenditures for the fiscal year 2026 will exceed $690 billion (approximately 978 trillion won). As AI infrastructure spending surpasses internal cash generation, the role of external funding and long-term contracts is increasing. In South Korea, investments are also being made to support AI data centers and power and energy infrastructure.
