NVIDIA Adjusts Rubin Ultra HBM Specifications to Alleviate Supply Pressure
NVIDIA is discussing adjustments to the HBM configuration of its next-generation Rubin Ultra GPU, potentially changing the main version from HBM4E 12Hi 384GB to HBM4 8Hi 192GB, and plans to launch an HBM4E 8Hi version. Analysis indicates that if NVIDIA's CoWoS capacity allocation reaches 1.2 million units by 2027, the expected accelerator output will be approximately 9.9 million units, with around 1.6 million units coming from Rubin Ultra. After adopting a lower-spec HBM solution, NVIDIA's HBM demand in 2027 is expected to decrease from 24.1 billion Gb to 21.6 billion Gb, a reduction of about 10%, with overall HBM demand potentially declining by about 4%. Analysts believe that this reduction in specifications is not due to weakened demand, but rather a strategy by NVIDIA to increase accelerator output in the face of limited HBM supply. As DRAM manufacturers are unable to match the expansion speed of TSMC's advanced processes and packaging capacity, HBM supply has become a limiting factor for AI chip production. Additionally, DRAM manufacturers find it challenging to significantly adjust capacity allocation, and smartphone and PC manufacturers in the consumer electronics sector are being affected by storage shortages, which may further exacerbate the pressure on traditional DRAM supply. By adjusting HBM configurations, NVIDIA aims to release more AI accelerator capacity under limited storage resources while alleviating the HBM supply bottleneck.
