John C. Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, stated that the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is pushing up the prices of certain items such as semiconductors and power equipment. He explained that AI investment has a greater impact on inflation and monetary policy decisions than on shocks to the financial markets. In a speech on July 15 in New York, he mentioned that the U.S. economy is influenced by optimism regarding technology and AI, increased corporate investment, and rising stock markets. While AI-related investments could lead to productivity improvements, he added that currently there is a race between supply and surging demand. Prices for semiconductors, power transformers, and technical equipment necessary for AI development are rising, and the cost increases of these inputs are beginning to affect other goods as well. The minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on June 16-17 also mentioned the impact of increased AI investment, with the S&P 500 index rising by about 6%. The minutes noted that the growing demand for AI infrastructure could be a factor contributing to inflation, suggesting that the demand for AI infrastructure may exert ongoing upward pressure on the prices of technology products and electricity. Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve Governor, mentioned that AI could stimulate economic growth and contribute to financial stability, but warned that the trend of companies increasingly utilizing the debt market for AI infrastructure investment should be monitored.
