The Lord of the Rings actor who ended up broke after the movie and had to sell his house: the story of Sean Astin
While The Lord of the Rings was breaking box office records and grossing nearly $2.9 billion, Sean Astin was going through a very different economic moment. The actor who played Samwise Gamgee stated that the salary agreed upon for the three films was so low that he was forced to sell his house.
The revelation was surprising because Astin was one of the protagonists of one of the most successful sagas in film history. However, he explained that his contract had been signed long before the trilogy became a global phenomenon.
When Peter Jackson chose him to portray Sam, Sean Astin had already been working in Hollywood for over a decade. The public knew him from The Goonies, where he played Mikey Walsh, later adding roles in films like Toy Soldiers, Encino Man, and Rudy.
That career ultimately led him to the adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's work. In the trilogy, he embodied Frodo's most loyal companion, a character with increasing prominence as the story progressed, eventually becoming one of the fan favorites.
His performance gave him international exposure, but it did not immediately change his financial situation. While the films were still in production, Astin had already signed a contract far below the value achieved by the franchise.
Sean Astin earned around $250,000 for the three films. Years later, he mentioned that this amount was not enough to cover his family's expenses, leading him to sell the house he had bought before traveling to New Zealand for filming.
The property was located in Encino, California. He purchased it in 1999 with his wife for $655,000 and sold it in 2001 for $710,000, six months before the release of "The Fellowship of the Ring." They then moved to an apartment in Calabasas while the first film began its run in theaters.
Astin was not the only one to speak about salaries. Orlando Bloom revealed that he received $175,000 for portraying Legolas throughout the trilogy. Elijah Wood explained that the cast could not renegotiate their contracts due to the consecutive filming of the three installments. Cate Blanchett made a similar statement, asserting that the cast never received the figures imagined by the public.
Today, Sean Astin's net worth is estimated at $5 million, according to various specialized media. This figure was built from the work done after The Lord of the Rings and not from the salary received for the trilogy.
After his time in the saga, he appeared in films like 50 First Dates and had roles in series such as 24, The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Stranger Things. He also developed a career as a voice actor, an activity he maintained alongside his other work in recent years, which, surprisingly, earned him higher sums than his historic role in the adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's work.
Additionally, he purchased a home in Calabasas in 2003 for $1.2 million. The property remains with the Astin family and is currently valued at around $3 million.
