Base Restructures Strategy for Corporate Payments and Builder Support

Coinbase's Layer 2 network, Base, is restructuring its strategy focusing on corporate payment infrastructure and builder support. In its 2026 strategic document, Base reported processing $17 trillion in stablecoin transactions last year, covering 26 currencies across 17 countries. The key directions for 2026 include building a global market, expanding payments and stablecoins, and strengthening builder hubs. The corporate segment is materialized through Base Ledger, emphasizing instant on-chain settlement, confidentiality, and built-in compliance as core features. Use cases include business-to-business payments, payroll, and financial operations, designed to prevent exposure of transaction counterparties and cash flows. Base Ledger connects funds directly to on-chain contracts, with KYC applied through Coinbase Direct or selected providers. A Base ecosystem fund is also in operation to support initial teams and developers. Base stated in its 2026 strategic document that it has supported over 50 teams. Recently, with leadership adjustments, Jesse Pollak has handed over leadership of the Base app to Jordan Fish to focus on chain infrastructure. Base operates as a Layer 2 connected to the Coinbase and Ethereum ecosystems without a separate network token. The number of customers and revenue for Base Ledger have not been disclosed, and network stability needs to be confirmed.
