Nuclear Energy Surpasses 7% of Electricity Generation, Supplying 6 Million Argentines
Nuclear energy has once again established itself as one of the pillars of the Argentine electrical system during the first half of 2026. Between January and June, the plants operated by Nucleoeléctrica Argentina generated 4,450,355 MWh, a volume that represented more than 7% of all electricity produced in the country during that period and allowed for the supply of 13% of national residential demand, even with Atucha I out of service due to its Life Extension Project.
In a country of approximately 47 million inhabitants and nearly 18 million residential electricity users, the contribution of nuclear generation during the first half of 2026 reached a significant magnitude. By covering 13% of national residential electricity demand, nuclear plants supplied the equivalent of the consumption of about 6 million people, considering an average consumption distributed among households.
The results reflect the strategic role that nuclear generation maintains within the national energy matrix, providing base-load energy continuously throughout the 24 hours of the day, regardless of weather conditions, complementing renewable sources and the thermal park.
This performance was achieved with Atucha II in Lima, Zárate, and the Cordoban Embalse fully operational, while work continues to extend the useful life of Atucha I, one of the most relevant infrastructure projects in the Argentine nuclear sector.
This result also consolidates the trend observed in recent years. In 2025, Nucleoeléctrica had recorded 10,760,572 MWh of annual net generation, marking a historic production record for the second consecutive year.
Beyond operational performance, one of the most important milestones of the semester was the formal creation of a new business unit aimed at internationally marketing the experience accumulated by the company over more than five decades of operation.
The initiative seeks to convert the knowledge developed in Argentina into an export platform for specialized services for the global nuclear industry.
During June, Nucleoeléctrica made a historic step by completing its first international sale of components developed in Argentina for CANDU nuclear reactors. The operation was carried out alongside Candu Energy Inc., a member of AtkinsRéalis, and included the provision of output shielding plugs with flow restrictors, components designed to optimize the operational and safety conditions of the fuel channels of this type of reactor.
The company considers that this operation constitutes a concrete step to transform Argentine engineering and technological knowledge into a permanent source of high-value-added exports.
Another advancement achieved during the semester was the signing of a memorandum of understanding to provide technical assistance to nuclear plants in Romania, also equipped with CANDU technology. This agreement strengthens Nucleoeléctrica's international strategy, which has already participated in projects related to nuclear facilities in Canada, Brazil, China, South Korea, and Spain, consolidating a network of technical cooperation with some of the world's leading nuclear operators.
In a context of increasing electrification and expansion of renewable energies, nuclear generation continues to play a key role as a firm energy source to ensure the stability of the electrical system. With constant production 24 hours a day and low carbon emissions during operation, nuclear plants complement the variability inherent in wind and solar generation, contributing to sustaining national electricity supply.
