Microsoft Begins Integration of Copilot Apps
Microsoft has started the process of integrating the consumer Copilot and the Microsoft 365 Copilot for business into a single app. While the entry points for personal accounts and company/school accounts will be reduced, data boundaries will be maintained. The new integrated app will be named 'Microsoft Copilot' and is set to be released for mobile and web in mid-August, and for Windows and Mac in mid-September. Data from personal and work accounts will remain separate within the app. According to Microsoft's support documentation, Microsoft Copilot is categorized as an AI companion for personal accounts, while Microsoft 365 Copilot is a productivity app that supports both work/school accounts and personal accounts. The integration process began earlier this year, with an announcement on March 17 that the consumer and commercial Copilots would be bundled into a single 'integrated experience.' Jacob Andreu is leading the Copilot initiative to unify the consumer and commercial experiences. On May 28, a new design for Microsoft 365 Copilot was unveiled, reporting usage increases of 27% for Word, 33% for Excel, 43% for PowerPoint, and 30% for Outlook. On June 22, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app was released with a chat-centric structure. A feature consolidation is also underway, with the deep research and podcast features set to be discontinued starting August 18. Users have raised concerns regarding the duplication of Copilot icons and issues with app differentiation.
