Guatemala Issues Maximum Alert Due to Fuego Volcano Eruption and Evacuates Nearby Communities

Guatemala has declared a danger alert due to the eruption of the Fuego volcano, initiating evacuations in nearby communities. The volcano, located 35 kilometers from the capital, has increased its activity with lava, gases, and ash. A new eruptive phase began on Monday morning, registering greater intensity during the night. Lava flows and columns of volcanic material were observed from the crater. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) has established an orange alert at the national level, the second highest level, to prepare institutions for a possible escalation. Dozens of residents from two villages on the slopes of the volcano were relocated to lower-risk areas, such as San Juan Alotenango, where makeshift shelters were set up. Many evacuees left with only clothing and basic food items due to the rapid evolution of volcanic activity. Authorities have activated emergency protocols.
