From Billionaire to Losing a $6 Billion Empire: The Fall of Shane Smith
Shane Smith is not a well-known name today, despite having once had billions of dollars in his account and running one of the most important companies in media. He found success early on due to his rebellious nature, but reality dealt him a blow that he barely managed to digest. Vice transitioned from being a magazine that covered topics that major newspapers or television channels were hesitant to tackle or considered taboo. This was the initial step in forging a network that was well-managed at the start of the digital era, but it failed in execution and ended up being a painful loss of money. Shane Smith lost almost all of his fortune after Vice's downfall. Who is Shane Smith and how did he found Vice? Shane Smith is a Canadian entrepreneur who created Vice, a media company that started in 1994 as an independent magazine in Montreal. The project began alongside Suroosh Alvi and Gavin McInnes under the name The Voice of Montreal, a publication focused on music, drugs, sex, fashion, nightlife, and local counterculture. Over time, the magazine changed its name to Vice and began to expand outside of Canada. The advent of the internet allowed it to transform its business model: it left the print format and became a digital platform with audiovisual content, documentaries, and television productions. During the 2010s, Vice positioned itself as one of the fastest-growing digital media outlets. The company created divisions for news, entertainment, and production while signing agreements with major companies to distribute its content. This progress caught the attention of investors betting on its global expansion. In 2013, A&E Networks bought a stake in the business, and years later, other funds contributed capital to scale up the project. The peak came in 2017 when TPG Capital invested $450 million and brought Vice's valuation to about $5.7 billion. At that time, Shane Smith's stake made his net worth reach $1.6 billion, placing him among the richest entrepreneurs in the sector. On the brink of bankruptcy: the company's problems Vice's growth occurred during a time when many digital companies were receiving large investments due to the rise in online consumption. However, the advertising-supported model began to face issues when major platforms concentrated most of the revenue. Additionally, Vice had built a massive structure, with thousands of employees, offices in several countries, and multiple production areas. As costs rose and revenues did not keep pace, the financial stability of the business began to complicate. The company attempted to adapt with cuts and strategy changes. In the years leading up to bankruptcy, it closed divisions, reduced staff, and sought buyers to sustain the project, but it failed to recover the value it had achieved at its peak. In 2023, Vice declared bankruptcy in the United States with millions in debt. The process ended with the sale of the company to a group of creditors for around $350 million, a figure far from the nearly $6 billion it was once worth. The fall also impacted the economy of its founders. The shares that had made Shane Smith a billionaire lost almost all their value when the company stopped trading at the figures of its peak expansion. Shane Smith's current net worth Shane Smith's current net worth is estimated at around $50 million. After reaching the figure of $1.6 billion, Vice's downfall was a severe blow to his finances, which also benefited from investments made during his best times. In 2015, he and his wife paid about $23 million for a property in Santa Monica. Such was the amount of money flowing at that time that they simply paid without even visiting the property. In 2021, they had to sell it, and the business, after the fall, was a success: they made $49 million from the deal. The same happened with a mansion in La Quinta, also in California. That house, located near a golf course, was acquired for $2.6 million and sold in 2023 for $5.2 million.
