Foreign Investment Hits Record High as South Korea's KOSPI Index Soars Over 17%
On July 31, South Korea's KOSPI index surged over 17% during trading, marking the largest single-day increase in history. Foreign investors net bought 1.6 trillion won worth of Korean stocks within the first two minutes of trading, accumulating a total net purchase of 7.18 trillion won throughout the day, setting a new historical record. Meanwhile, South Korean individual investors net sold 8.2 trillion won, establishing a record for the highest single-day net sell-off. Market experts warn that this rebound may just be a "dead cat bounce," as the South Korean stock market is significantly influenced by foreign capital flows and is highly volatile. Analyst Lee Chae-won noted that it remains difficult to determine whether the rebound marks the beginning of an upward trend, with the key factors being the semiconductor cycle and future supply bottlenecks. Asset management professionals indicated that retail investors might sell off to lock in profits as the index approaches 8,000 to 9,000 points, potentially curbing the upward trend.
