Buffett Indicator Reaches All-Time High of 239% in U.S. Stock Market
The total market capitalization of the U.S. stock market has reached an all-time high of 239% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This is a measure used by Warren Buffett to assess whether the market is overheated, surpassing levels seen during the dot-com bubble, the global financial crisis, and the bear market of 2022. According to Barchart on the 15th, the 'Buffett Indicator' recorded 239%, marking a new historical peak. This is similar to the 244.4% reported by GuruFocus as of August 13, suggesting that the U.S. stock market is excessively overvalued compared to the size of the economy. The Buffett Indicator became widely known in 2001 when Warren Buffett mentioned it as a good measure for evaluating market value. He warned that when this indicator is between 70% and 80%, it is attractive to buy stocks, and when it approaches 200%, it indicates 'playing with fire.' Currently, the 239% figure significantly exceeds the 136.9% peak during the dot-com bubble in 2000 and the 190% level. Motley Fool reported that the Buffett Indicator has reached 238%, which is 2.4 times the size of the U.S. economy. This suggests that when 100% represents fair valuation, the stock market is poised for a bubble burst. Such high valuations have arisen due to continuous capital inflows, growth expectations, and liquidity support. Veteran investor Jeremy Grantham has warned that the U.S. stock market has reached the most expensive valuation in history. The historical average of the Buffett Indicator is about 88%, and the current 239% is well above the long-term average, signaling potential market overheating.
