Brazilian Rancher Loan Sparks Blockchain Innovation Controversy

A rancher in Brazil secured a loan using ten cattle as collateral, but this has raised concerns that it is far from a typical case of supporting financially vulnerable groups. The loan amount is approximately $19,700, which is only 1% of the land value of the ranch. The ranch is located in Ibiporã, Paraná, and is operated by João Guilherme Brenner, a member of a family that has owned the land for several generations. The ranch spans over 1.3 square miles and is reported to have more than 500 cattle recently. This transaction was structured by the agtech startup CowMed and the bond fund Target Fundo de Investimento em Direitos Creditórios. However, industry experts believe that this case is more about generating buzz than demonstrating the practical utility of blockchain. Livestock collateral loans have existed for a long time, and animal tracking is possible without blockchain. Ultimately, this controversy highlights once again how the cryptocurrency and blockchain industries often rely more on marketing than on actual utility.
