10-Year U.S. Treasury Yield Hits Highest Level Since 2007
The U.S. Treasury Department issued $42 billion in 10-year bonds on August 13, with the yield reaching its highest level since 2007. Although there is still demand from investors, the required return for purchasing U.S. Treasuries continues to rise. The yield on 10-year Treasuries has climbed to around 4.75%, an 18-month high, while the yield on 30-year Treasuries hovers above 5.2%. The upcoming auction of 30-year bonds on Thursday is expected to see financing costs reach their highest level in about 25 years. This indicates that even if the Federal Reserve does not raise interest rates in September, the long-term financing costs for the U.S. government may not decrease. Currently, the main conflict in the U.S. interest rate market lies in the fact that the policy rate is determined by the Federal Reserve, while long-term borrowing costs are influenced by a combination of fiscal policy, inflation, oil prices, and investors' risk preferences.
