0.7% of German companies see interest in the digital euro
A study by ZEW reveals that 77% of German companies do not expect any impact from the digital euro on their business. About 17% anticipate negative effects, while only 6% expect positive effects. Only 0.7% of companies foresee clearly positive effects. The survey, conducted in January 2026 among 800 companies, shows that large companies are slightly more optimistic, with nearly 3% of positive responses. Skepticism is attributed to uncertainty about the final form of the digital euro. The ECB needs to better communicate the benefits of this new currency to encourage companies to adapt. The digital euro should remain voluntary for individuals, but most merchants may be required to accept it. Concerns persist regarding the loss of freedom and privacy, as the digital euro is seen as a potential surveillance tool. Although the ECB claims that the digital euro will not be programmable, fears remain about the infrastructure that could allow arbitrary control of payments.
