Syria Ready to Cut Russian Oil Imports for US Sanctions Relief
The Syrian government has agreed to sharply reduce imports of Russian oil in exchange for the complete lifting of long-standing restrictions. This will allow the new Syrian authorities to diversify energy resource supplies and attract investments from American and European firms. Syria has been on the list of state sponsors of terrorism since 1979. During discussions, the US received a commitment from Syria to reduce purchases of Russian fuel, which could improve the chances of lifting the SST status. Syrian officials noted that the country currently depends on Russian oil out of necessity. Damascus is seeking alternatives, discussing contracts with the French company TotalEnergies and signing agreements with ConocoPhillips and Novaterra. This year, Russian oil supplies to Syria have increased by 75%, reaching about 60,000 barrels per day, making Russia the main supplier. A Syrian analyst noted that replacing volumes of Russian oil cannot happen quickly without the risk of fuel shortages.
