Oobit Launches Contactless Service to Withdraw Cryptocurrency from ATMs via Smartphone Taps
Oobit has launched a new contactless cash withdrawal service that allows users to withdraw cryptocurrency from ATMs using smartphone taps.
This significantly enhances the convenience of digital assets, including stablecoins. In this service, users who have completed identity verification (KYC) can use the Oobit virtual card within their device to make withdrawals. The process involves tapping the smartphone on an NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled ATM, followed by entering a secure PIN code displayed after biometric authentication through the app.
The biggest advantage is that there is no need to possess a physical card, link to a personal bank account, or transfer funds to an exchange in advance. Users can withdraw cash up to $250 (approximately 40,000 yen) per transaction, with a limit of three withdrawals per card per day.
Utilizing Existing Infrastructure and Addressing Stablecoin Challenges
Traditionally, cashing out cryptocurrency required finding a dedicated cryptocurrency ATM or going through exchanges or banks.
Oobit has made it possible to process transactions at common NFC-enabled ATMs by leveraging existing Visa and payment network infrastructure. As pointed out by CEO Amram Adar, while stablecoins are widely circulated globally, there are challenges in cashing them out. This smartphone-operated cash access is particularly significant in regions like Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, where the adoption of cryptocurrency is growing despite low bank account ownership rates.
Hurdles to Adoption and Future Prospects
While convenience is increasing, challenges remain. The availability of NFC-enabled ATMs, regulatory conditions in various countries, and fees from ATM operators and payment networks are key factors for service adoption. Additionally, due to the implementation of appropriate identity verification procedures, it will not function as a completely anonymous withdrawal tool.
Furthermore, Oobit is expanding beyond consumer services, developing virtual Visa cards for AI (artificial intelligence) agents that have undergone KYB (Know Your Business) verification, moving into the realm of autonomous business payments. The company's efforts to merge existing financial networks with the latest technology are bringing cryptocurrency closer to becoming a true "everyday currency."
