UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed shock at the Houthi armed group's renewed attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea, warning that such actions could escalate regional tensions and further entangle Yemen in conflict. Guterres noted that the deteriorating situation in Yemen threatens peace prospects and severely impacts the economy, humanitarian efforts, and the environment both regionally and beyond. He called on all parties to de-escalate the situation immediately, urging the Houthis to cease further attacks, comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2722 and related resolutions, protect commercial vessels, and uphold freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Additionally, Guterres emphasized that the right to international navigation and freedom of navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and surrounding waters must be restored.
