The "Web3 Business Hub (WBH)" is a corporate-oriented Web3 community jointly operated by "New Economy" and "KudasaiJP," hosting seminars every month that serve as references for the development of Web3 business.
This month's theme for August is "From DeFi to On-Chain Finance - Reflecting on the History of On-Chain Finance with SMBC Nikko Securities."
DeFi, or Decentralized Finance, has developed as an attempt to openly reconstruct financial functions such as trading, lending, asset management, stablecoins, and derivatives through blockchain and smart contracts. Since the DeFi Summer of 2020, new financial primitives such as DEX, lending, AMM, liquidity mining, and yield farming have rapidly spread, becoming one of the largest experimental grounds in the Web3 space.
However, its history has been marked not only by success but also by hacking, excessive leverage, governance issues, regulatory points, and market turmoil. After the excitement and chaos, DeFi is evolving towards a form that connects more closely with the real financial system, including RWA, stablecoins, tokenized securities, on-chain payments, and infrastructure for institutional investors.
In this session of the Web3 Business Hub, we will invite Mr. Taisuke Isono, Head of the Nikko Open Innovation Lab and DeFi Technology Department at SMBC Nikko Securities, to discuss the birth of DeFi, the DeFi Summer, the current state after market turmoil, and how financial institutions are beginning to perceive DeFi, in a lecture and roundtable format. What has DeFi changed, and what has it left behind? We will explore the next possibilities of on-chain finance together with the participants.
