China Begins Mass Production of Its Own DUV Lithography Equipment
China has started mass production of its self-developed deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography equipment. Shanghai Aisena Electronics Technology Group plans to supply the equipment to China's largest foundry, SMIC, as well as Huahong Semiconductor and Changxin Memory starting this year. DUV lithography equipment is a key tool for etching semiconductor circuits onto wafers, and ASML currently dominates the market. Aisena aims to produce about five units this year and plans to expand production to 20 units by 2027. However, it seems challenging for Chinese-made DUV equipment to emerge as a competitor to ASML. Reuters reported that Aisena's equipment requires performance validation and that there is a significant technological gap with ASML. JP Morgan analyzed that stable productivity and reliability are crucial for semiconductor manufacturing. The impact on the domestic semiconductor industry is expected to be significant in the medium to long term, and if China's DUV equipment localization succeeds, it could support the production capacity expansion of SMIC and CXMT. However, it appears difficult to catch up with ASML's EUV technology and ecosystem in the short term.
