US School District Halts Introduction of AI Robot Teacher Program
On July 30, the Central School District of Salamanca, New York, announced the suspension of its pilot program to introduce the AI humanoid robot teacher "Sally." Developed by Realbotix, the robot costs approximately $60,000 and was originally intended to serve as a classroom assistant to interact with students. The project raised concerns among parents regarding student data privacy, and parents pointed out that Realbotix also produces sex robots, further fueling the controversy. The local teachers' union also opposed the plan. The school district stated that the project has been paused and will continue to work with the New York State Department of Education to improve student data privacy agreements while maintaining communication with the community. District Superintendent Mark Beehler emphasized that robots cannot replace teachers, as teaching is always a process between people, and replacing teachers with robots does not serve the best interests of students.
