US Asks 35 Countries to Choose Sides in US-China AI Camp
The United States is preparing to ask the 35 signatories of the "AI Opportunity Statement" to choose sides between the US and Chinese AI camps. If these countries join the Chinese-led AI framework, they may be excluded from the US-led cooperative system. A draft internal letter from the US State Department indicates that the letter has not yet been sent and its content may still be modified. Pax Silica, established by the US last year, currently has 25 signatories, covering cooperation in AI models, chips, critical minerals, energy, and advanced manufacturing, aiming to establish an AI supply chain system composed of allies and partners. This move is clearly aimed at China's World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), which was established in July and has 29 founding member countries. China is also promoting open-weight models, AI training, and cooperation centers to developing countries. Kazakhstan is the only known country that has simultaneously joined both the US and Chinese frameworks and is a key source of critical minerals valued by the US. If this request is ultimately implemented, the US-China AI competition will expand to include the contest for nations, making it difficult for countries to balance US cooperation in chips, investment, and supply chains with China's open models and AI projects.
