Three out of 44 Planned Shelters for Educational Institutions Opened in Kyiv

In Kyiv, only three out of 44 planned radiation shelters for educational institutions, scheduled for 2024-2026, have officially been put into operation. During this period, nine bomb shelters for schools and kindergartens have been constructed, but most of them are still awaiting approval documents. The Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City State Administration reported that nine facilities have been built for seven schools and two kindergartens. The funding program for 2024-2026 provides for the construction of shelters for 44 educational institutions, which accounts for about 10% of all schools in the capital, where more than 350,000 children and students are educated. One shelter is designed to accommodate between 300 and 1,000 people, making the implementation of the project critically important for the city's infrastructure. Of the nine constructed facilities, only three can actually be used for their intended purpose. Official readiness certificates have been received for the shelters in a school in the Obolon district and two kindergartens in the Darnytsia district. The remaining six facilities in the Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Obolon districts have not been legally put into operation. The shelter construction program began in early 2024, with the first tenders held at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. The government allocated 2.3 billion UAH to support educational institutions for infrastructure modernization and preparation for the heating season.
