$4.5 Billion AI Fund Situational Awareness Faces Collapse, Investors Warned Founder About Leverage Risks
On August 5, the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered significant losses in July due to aggressive investment strategies, despite attracting support from several prominent investors in Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Some investors had previously warned about the fund's high leverage strategy and risk management.
According to reports, Situational Awareness was founded by 24-year-old Leopold Aschenbrenner and rapidly grew into an approximately $45 billion AI investment fund without professional investment management experience. Its investors include D1 Capital founder Dan Sundheim, Greenoaks co-founder Neil Mehta, XN founder Gaurav Kapadia, former Tiger Global public equity head Feroz Dewan, and Stripe co-founders Patrick Collison and John Collison.
Insiders revealed that the fund had previously expanded its exposure to AI-related stocks through significant borrowing. After a sharp decline in some holdings in July, the fund faced margin calls from lenders and was forced to raise cash, ultimately selling off most of its public equity portfolio to Castle Securities.
The fund's recruitment documents indicate that Situational Awareness has "no restrictions" on investment scope, position concentration, and leverage usage. Some investors had warned founder Aschenbrenner that high leverage could pose risks, while also expressing dissatisfaction with the frequency of information disclosure and communication.
Research and consulting firm Aksia acknowledged Aschenbrenner's investment capabilities and industry influence in a March 2025 assessment but cautioned investors to be wary of "risk management issues stemming from overconfidence," especially in cases of high leverage.
Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness in 2024, quickly expanding asset management scale through investment judgments in the AI supply chain. He was previously recognized for profiting from bets on AI-related stocks like SK Hynix and SanDisk, earning him the nickname "Nostradamus of the AI field."
Recent investor communications indicate that the fund has still risen about 80% this year, while holding private equity investments in AI companies such as Fluidstack, MatX, and Anthropic. However, as the risks of high leverage strategies become apparent, the market is beginning to reassess the risk control issues within the AI investment boom.
