Musk Mentions Orbital AI Computing for 2029
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has reiterated the need for orbital computing to address the increasing demand for AI computations. He stated that due to power supply shortages and ground facility permitting issues, a space-based computing platform could be the only way for large-scale AI expansion around 2029. SpaceX has presented low Earth orbit satellite data centers as a long-term option, indicating in a document submitted to the SEC that it could deploy orbital AI computing satellites by 2028. However, orbital computing has not yet been commercialized, and the U.S. Government Accountability Office pointed out that engineering barriers exist. The Brookings Institution noted that while orbital data centers could solve AI power grid bottleneck issues, there are concerns about the cooling capabilities of large facilities.
