Canaan reports Ethiopia mining paused at 4.96 EH/s in July
Canaan's July mining update indicated that 4.96 exahashes per second (EH/s) from paused operations in Ethiopia contributed to a total of 14.24 EH/s of global operating computing power, representing nearly 35% of the reported total. The update did not clarify how much capacity was hashing at the end of July. Excluding Ethiopia's contribution from the global figure results in 9.28 EH/s, but this is an exclusion calculation as Canaan's definition of operating computing power includes theoretical output from energized mining machines, regardless of their operational status. Canaan's July report assigned the full 4.96 EH/s to two projects in Ethiopia, despite noting that operations were paused. The filing did not specify whether the paused machines remained energized or how much, if any, was hashing on July 31. In contrast, as of June 30, Ethiopia was reported at only 0.36 EH/s of operating power due to a mining site temporarily going offline for local power-grid maintenance. The July update reinstated the full 4.96 EH/s to the operating column without confirming the cause of the pause or its temporary status. Canaan mined 46 BTC in July and held 1,917 BTC and 3,952 ETH at month-end, but these production figures do not encompass all rows in the global capacity table. Canaan's 14.24 EH/s figure should be interpreted as operating capacity under its theoretical definition.
