$600 Billion AI Spending, Adoption Rate Stalls at 18%

In 2026, big tech companies are expected to spend around $600 billion on AI, yet the adoption rate among U.S. businesses remains at 18%. Investment in data centers and servers is outpacing the rate of adoption, highlighting key issues around return on investment and cash flow. Alphabet has revised its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to between $195 billion and $205 billion, while Microsoft has projected $190 billion. Meta anticipates spending between $130 billion and $145 billion. However, research from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that only 18% of businesses utilized AI in their operations from November 2025 to January 2026, with this figure expected to rise to 22% within six months. Among companies that have adopted AI, 57% have applied it to three or fewer business functions. While investment in AI infrastructure is increasing, the actual scope of adoption remains narrow, creating a gap between investment and implementation. Market reactions are mixed, with investors shifting their focus from the recoverability of AI spending to long-term profitability.
