When Bitcoin's Unsolved Mystery Meets a New Meme
Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the enigmatic creator Satoshi Nakamoto. To this day, Nakamoto's true identity remains unknown. He created such a groundbreaking financial system but has never made a public appearance. Today, Bitcoin's market capitalization has surpassed $1.5 trillion, and it is estimated that Nakamoto has about 1,096,361 Bitcoins stored in his wallet for nearly 17 years. These Bitcoins have long been part of the mysterious narrative surrounding Bitcoin, but they may also become one of the most significant long-term security risks in the future. It is crucial to note that as cryptographic technology continues to evolve, especially with the development of quantum computing, the vast amount of Bitcoin behind these wallets may face security risks in the future.
In the early days of Bitcoin, many mining rewards took the form of something called Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK). Unlike the later more common Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH), which hides the public key behind a hash until the Bitcoin is spent, P2PK directly records the public key on the blockchain. This is very important when discussing quantum security. For P2PKH, the public key can remain hidden behind the hash until the Bitcoin is spent; however, for P2PK, the public key has already been exposed on the blockchain. With today's computing power, deriving the private key from the public key is nearly impossible. However, if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge in the future, these early Bitcoins with exposed public keys may become the first assets to face serious risks.
The Origin of Bitcoin
Have you ever wondered who Satoshi Nakamoto really is? Is he still alive? Have you thought about the possibility that one day his wallet could actually be cracked? If hackers gain access to those Bitcoins and sell them off in large quantities, it could pose a significant threat to the entire cryptocurrency industry.
The mystery surrounding Nakamoto may be far more complex than we imagine. Nearly twenty years before Bitcoin's inception, a video game called "Space Quest IV" featured a digital currency called Buckazoids, whose symbol closely resembles the Bitcoin symbol we know today. As we continue to investigate the developers and related figures behind this game, things start to get even more interesting. The first figure is Hal Finney, one of the most important people in Bitcoin's history. Finney was a cryptographer who participated in the development of Reusable Proof of Work years before Bitcoin was created. After Nakamoto launched Bitcoin in 2009, Finney became the first person to receive Bitcoin directly from Nakamoto—Nakamoto sent him 10 BTC as a test.
Today, Finney has passed away, but before entering the Bitcoin and cryptography space, he was also involved in the early video game industry.
Next is Satoshi Uesaka, a Japanese game designer who had some work connections with Sierra On-Line, one of the most influential PC game companies at the time and the company behind "Space Quest IV." Then there is Rodney Nakamoto, an early tech entrepreneur and game developer who founded Interactive Designs, a game studio that collaborated with several major publishers, including Sierra On-Line. Thus, we see the same company appearing in the background of this story.
After seeing these names, you should understand what I mean.
Potential Risks from Quantum Computing
Returning to the issue of quantum security. With rapid technological advancements, if quantum computing becomes powerful enough to threaten existing blockchain cryptography, the entire blockchain industry may face significant challenges regarding wallet security. Recently, Binance founder CZ discussed in a post the potential threats that quantum computing may pose to existing blockchain cryptography. While he believes that the crypto industry can address this risk by upgrading to post-quantum security systems, he raised an even more interesting question: What about Nakamoto's Bitcoins that have never moved? If this system requires holders to migrate their assets to quantum-resistant wallets in the future, Nakamoto will also face a choice. If his Bitcoins are transferred, it means that Nakamoto—or at least someone who possesses his private key—still exists and can control these assets. If these coins never move, CZ suggested that the community may have to consider locking or destroying these addresses in the future to prevent quantum hackers from cracking them first.
And this is where Meme Bitcoin (MBTC) enters the story.
What is Meme Bitcoin (MBTC)
MBTC turns this issue into something the entire crypto community can participate in. It does not want to leave the quantum threat solely to developers or cryptographers to solve but hopes to turn it into a public action: Can we find a way to access the 1,096,361 BTC in Nakamoto's wallet before quantum computing does?
Through MBTC, every participant can contribute to the attempt to find Nakamoto's wallet private key. Users can generate and test possible private keys, complete tasks, create and spread memes, and join the ever-expanding community action. This concept is known as Proof-of-Viral, which can be understood as an imitation of Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work. In the Proof-of-Viral system, "spreading participation" itself is proof. The project measures this "viral energy" through various promotional means such as fan count and retweets. Those who participate in spreading and validating this content are called "spreaders," essentially the "miners" in the MBTC ecosystem. As more users spread content, the network accumulates more viral proof, and blocks with stronger spreading participation are recognized by the network.
Bitcoin miners earn BTC rewards by contributing computing power to the network, while MBTC participants earn rewards by expanding community influence. In Proof-of-Viral, the community itself becomes the "miner." Creating memes, completing tasks, publishing interesting viewpoints and discussions, and bringing more people into the community can all be seen as a form of "work."
Additionally, MBTC deliberately incorporates many elements related to Bitcoin's origins and the mystery of Nakamoto's identity into its narrative. These elements are reflected not only in the project's branding design but also throughout its game mechanics, task design, and community culture.
How to Participate
Participating is very simple. Users can visit the MBTC website and participate in the Crack Mission, which is essentially a simple one-click game. Each time you click, the system generates a possible private key, and participants try to determine whether these private keys match Nakamoto's wallet. Each attempt is recorded as part of the community's collective action. Although the probability of actually finding the correct private key is extremely low, the core of this project lies in the act of "genuinely trying" itself. According to the data released by the project, as of the end of August 2026, the community has completed over 2.4 million attempts to crack Nakamoto's wallet.
Meanwhile, users can also participate through social tasks on X. By posting content, initiating discussions, and inviting new users to join the ecosystem, participants can increase their Proof-of-Viral contributions and earn MBTC rewards. Overall, MBTC provides users with two ways to participate: either attempt to crack the mystery or help spread the mystery. Both actions drive this community-driven experiment.
In other words, what MBTC wants to "mine" is not just tokens but attention—this is also the core logic of memes. The project aims to transform memes, participation, and attention into a decentralized cultural movement centered around Bitcoin's history.
Reward Mechanism
Unlike many crypto projects that allocate a portion of tokens to the founding team before launch, MBTC states that its team has not pre-allocated any shares. The entire token supply is gradually distributed through community participation.
The total supply of $MBTC is 21 billion tokens, exactly 10,000 times the maximum supply of Bitcoin, which is 21 million. It also adopts a Bitcoin-inspired issuance model: new tokens are released approximately every 10 minutes, and mining rewards are halved every four months.
Users who join during the early registration window are eligible to receive a limited MBTC Emblem as a mark of their early community membership. Additionally, users can earn points by participating in Crack attempts, completing tasks, and inviting new members. So far, MBTC has not disclosed the specific uses and rights of points and Emblems, but it is certain that they belong to special rewards for early participants.
More importantly, if the MBTC community can indeed access Bitcoins from a Satoshi-era wallet in the future, the project envisions that all obtained BTC will be shared with community participants. In other words, rewards will be distributed to $MBTC holders based on the amount of BTC obtained and the actual circulation of $MBTC at that time. Overall, this concept is very similar to the culture of early Bitcoin participants: being "early" not only means buying tokens sooner but also proving that you participated in this narrative before it became mainstream. So, perhaps now is the time for you to start trying to crack this passkey.

Recently, the Meme Coin market has become very crowded. Especially on Robinhood, a large number of tokens related to animals, AI, stocks, and other short-cycle narratives are launched daily. Most Meme Coins borrow existing cultural symbols and primarily rely on attention and speculation. According to the team, this funding will be used to support the next phase of the project, including global community activities, public issuance, and preparations for future exchange listings. A significant recent action occurred on September 7, when MBTC officially launched the Proof-of-Viral campaign. The project plans to gradually advance broader launches between September and October. Currently, according to MBTC's profile, there are also speculations that the token may enter the Robinhood ecosystem, but this has not been officially confirmed.
We are optimistic about MBTC's potential to become a hot topic in the market in the near future. Of course, the most important thing to watch next is whether the project can convert the attention gained in the early stages of its launch into sustainable community participation. If the community truly recognizes this narrative, MBTC's popularity will quickly ignite the market in a short time.
