Vulnerability Discovered in AI, HAWK Digital Signature
An AI model has discovered an attack that can reduce the security strength of the HAWK digital signature algorithm by half. Anthropic's 'Claude Mythos Preview' model achieved this result with approximately 60 hours of work and a cost of $100,000. HAWK is being considered as a next-generation standard candidate amid concerns about its vulnerability to quantum computers; however, Bitcoin and Ethereum, which use elliptic curve-based signatures, are not direct targets of this attack. The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP-360 includes algorithms standardized by NIST, providing a responsive structure. However, BIP-361 claims that cryptographic attack techniques are becoming up to 20 times faster, warning that the transition to quantum resistance could be accelerated. Anthropic reported that the key recovery cost for HAWK has decreased from 2^64 to 2^38. Additionally, a 200 to 800 times faster attack method has been discovered for the AES algorithm, with AI's search methods contributing to the identification of improved attacks. This case is seen as evidence that AI-based cryptanalysis could change the security paradigm.
