12 Meme Coins Trade After Dolly Parton's Death
Immediately after the news of American country music star Dolly Parton's death broke, at least 12 meme coins based on Solana using her name and image began trading. Within minutes of her nephew announcing her passing on the afternoon of the 25th, unauthorized meme coins appeared in the market. The traded tokens included 'RIP Dolly Parton', 'DollyParton', 'Dollar Parton', and 'Dolly'. These tokens were confirmed to be issued by third parties unrelated to Parton or her family. Most tokens plummeted shortly after issuance, and by the previous evening, the market capitalization of several tokens had dropped to thousands of dollars. The combined trading volume of these tokens reached millions of dollars, but specific trading volumes or the identities of the issuers were not disclosed. The only blockchain project officially linked to Parton was 'Dollyverse', which took place at SXSW in 2022. This case illustrates how the death of a celebrity quickly becomes a subject for meme coin issuance. Platforms like PumpFun allow anyone to easily create tokens that can be traded at low costs, which may lead to an increase in speculative tokens.
