U.S. Effective Tariff Rate Falls Below 7%
The effective tariff rate on U.S. imports has dropped from 11% at the end of last year to below 7% in May of this year. According to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the impact of tariffs on consumer prices has shown stability in recent months. The effective tariff rate is an indicator calculated by dividing the actual tariffs paid by importers by the value of the imported goods, which differs from the government's nominal tariff rate. The Fed noted that tariffs accounted for a significant portion of inflation until February of this year, but the subsequent decline in the effective tariff rate has reduced their impact on consumer prices. A decrease in tariff burdens can alleviate upward pressure on import costs, which may positively affect consumer prices. The St. Louis Fed stated that if the effective tariff rate stabilizes or decreases further from its current level, the share of tariffs in overall inflation could diminish. However, there is no evidence to suggest that a decline in tariff rates will immediately lead to a shift in the Fed's policy.
