Trump and Islamophobia: The Chorus That No Longer Mobilizes Votes

Donald Trump has dedicated his second term to actions that would once have revived accusations of Islamophobia. His administration restricted immigration from majority-Muslim countries and launched massive attacks against Iran. However, the term 'Islamophobic' no longer carries the same political weight as it did in 2017.

According to an analysis by Newsweek, the narrative has diluted due to electoral complexities and international alliances. The phrase 'Muslim ban' peaked in Google Trends searches in January 2017, but since March 2025, it has not approached those levels.

The Paradox of Trump and Muslims

Trump continues to use incendiary rhetoric. He called Somalia 'barely a country' and referred to Ilhan Omar as 'garbage.' He also shared a post mocking kindergarten children wearing hijabs, which led to threats against a school in St. Paul.

His immigration policies are restrictive. In January 2026, a proclamation completely restricted entry from 19 countries and partially from another 20, in addition to holders of travel documents from the Palestinian Authority. The State Department froze visa processing for nationals from 75 countries.

On February 28, U.S. and Israeli forces launched approximately 900 attacks against Iran in 12 hours. They killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of officials. At least 157 people died when a missile struck a girls' school in Minab.

Trump announced Khamenei's death on Truth Social, calling him one of the most evil people in history. It was the largest use of force against a majority-Muslim country in a generation, but almost no one discussed it in those terms.

The political coalition surrounding him has changed. Muslim advocacy groups like CAIR recorded 8,683 complaints of discrimination in 2025, the highest number in 30 years. However, the accusation no longer defines Trump as it once did.

The Shift in Democratic Language

Evidence of the change is legislative. Representative Judy Chu has introduced the NO BAN Act in four consecutive congresses to prohibit religious discrimination in immigration. Co-sponsors fell from 219 in 2019 to 121 in the current Congress.

In 2020, the House passed the provisions of the bill 233-183, with all voting Democrats and two Republicans in favor. But when 61 Democrats wrote to Trump in February condemning the expansion, they called it 'a cruel and racist political agenda disguised as national security.' They did not use the word 'Islamophobic.'

Senators like Mark Kelly, on Meet the Press, said the message was that 'they don’t want brown people coming to the United States.' Tim Walz said Trump had chosen to attack 'an entire community.' Andy Kim called the ban 'rooted in hate,' and then moved on to prices.

The Republicans were more specific. Tuberville called on the government to 'IMMEDIATELY PROHIBIT all immigrants from ISLAM.' Chip Roy stated that the answer was to stop importing Islamists. This suggests they recognize the issue, even if the Democrats do not name it.

In 2017, Schumer cried denouncing the travel ban, and Trump mocked him. Now, Democrats avoid the term 'Islamophobia' to not alienate voters who might still lean towards Trump.

The Muslim Vote Fragmentation

Muslim voters remain more Democratic than Republican, but they are no longer an anti-Trump bloc. The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) found that in 2024, 50% supported Kamala Harris, 31% supported Trump, and 12% supported Jill Stein.

Among Muslim men, 42% voted for Trump. Other polls vary: CAIR's exit poll gave Stein 53%, Trump 21, and Harris 20. AP's VoteCast had Harris at 63%. All three agree that Democratic support has collapsed.

Gaza played a significant role. Anger over Biden's support for Israel led to over 100,000 'uncommitted' voters in Michigan's Democratic primaries. Trump then led in Dearborn, where Harris only received 36%, compared to Biden's 69% in 2020.

That does not mean Muslims have embraced Trump. Most have not. But it makes Islamophobia an uncomfortable attack when a substantial minority of those voters is willing to vote for him.

In 2016, only 8% of Muslim voters voted for Trump according to Pew. This shift has transformed politics. Now, Muslim candidates like Abdul El-Sayed are winning Democratic primaries for the Senate, with attacks turning against the attackers.

Relations with Muslim Governments

Trump has deepened ties with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. His first foreign trip took him to those countries, announcing Saudi investment commitments of USD $600 billion, exchanges with Qatar for USD $1.2 trillion, and over USD $200 billion in agreements with the UAE.

Nine months later, he was bombing Tehran. The relationship with Muslim governments does not respond to accusations about his treatment of Muslims at home. Politically, it complicates the landscape.

Trump can denounce Somali immigrants one month and embrace Arab rulers the next. This erodes the notion that he is a one-dimensional anti-Muslim president.

The Gulf monarchies do not represent American Muslims, but their public support gives him political cover. This makes it difficult for critics to use Islamophobia as a central theme.

The contrast with 2017 is evident. Back then, travel restrictions were seen as a religious attack. Now, the administration justifies the measures as national security, and Arab allies do not protest.

The Exhaustion of Discourse

A simple explanation is fatigue. Trump has been central in American politics for over a decade. The language that astonished in 2017 may have lost its ability to generate a new political identity.

Google Trends data shows that interest in 'Muslim ban' spiked in January 2017, but since March 2025, it has not approached those levels. In contrast, 'travel ban' continues to have spikes when restrictions expand.

Americans are closely following politics, but they seem to have separated religion from the measures. However, the ISPU's Islamophobia index rose from 25 in 2022 to 33 in 2025, with increases among white evangelicals and Catholics.

Muslim organizations still use the term. CAIR accused Trump of amplifying fanaticism in July. But Democrats use it more about Congressional Republicans than about Trump.

Fatigue is plausible but difficult to prove. Politics has become more complex: Islamophobia no longer explains Trump's relationship with American Muslims.

What Would Bring Back the Accusation?

The upcoming elections will be a test. If Muslim voters who shifted towards Trump in 2024 turn against Republicans, especially in Michigan, the accusation could be reignited. Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for the Senate this month, and attacks against him are already proving counterproductive.

Support for reducing immigration has fallen since the 2024 campaign. If Muslim voters remain divided, the lesson will be that Islamophobia continues to be a serious accusation against specific policies, but it does not work as a general explanation.

Trump did not change enough to kill the accusation. But politics changed: Muslim voters supported him, Muslim governments embraced him, and Muslim politicians continue to win. The accusation survived, but the political reality it once explained no longer exists.

The Democratic case is constitutional. Schumer and other senators wrote to Trump disputing his claim that hostilities with Iran had ended, calling the war unconstitutional. But the emotional weight of 2017 has not been replicated.

Islamophobia has become a cross-cutting issue. Hakeem Jeffries called it 'a cancer' after anti-Muslim posts from Republicans. Even Democrats like Eric Adams have been accused of it. In that context, criticism of Trump loses specificity.

According to Newsweek, the refrain 'Trump the Islamophobe' no longer defines his presidency. The political reality is more nuanced: Muslim voters are a diverse electorate, and Trump's foreign policy includes alliances and conflicts. The accusation remains serious, but its mobilizing power has diminished.
