The Share of Chinese Cars in Europe Exceeded 11%

In July, the share of Chinese automakers in new car sales in Europe exceeded 11%. The main factor driving this growth has been affordable plug-in hybrids, which are not subject to additional EU tariffs. Dataforce analyst Julian Litzinger noted that Chinese companies attract buyers with low prices, especially in the car rental segment. About three-quarters of Chinese car sales in the EU come from MG SAIC Motor, BYD, and Chery, which offer models at lower prices. The rise of Chinese brands increases competition for European automakers like Volkswagen and Stellantis. The EU is discussing the possibility of imposing tariffs on plug-in hybrids, but Germany advocates for protecting its automotive industry. In May, Ukrainians purchased 900 Chinese passenger cars, which is 43% less than in May 2025, of which 754 were new. Hybrids accounted for 28% of the Chinese car market, gasoline models 18%, and diesel 2%. In April, Ukrainians bought 1,252 passenger cars from China, which is 0.3% less compared to the same month last year. In the second quarter of 2026, Ukrainians acquired nearly 17,000 new and used hybrid cars. In June, Chinese brands accounted for more than a third of new plug-in hybrid car sales in Europe.
