Proposal for Quantum Computer Attack Defense Mechanism
A new defense method has been proposed to counter Bitcoin theft attacks using quantum computers. Corey Fields, a Bitcoin developer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), revealed three ideas for mitigating quantum attacks on the Bitcoin developer mailing list. The first proposal, called 'Quantum Landmine', requires Bitcoin holders to register cryptographic proofs, and if an attacker steals Bitcoin, they must provide an equivalent amount of quantum-resistant Bitcoin as collateral. The second proposal, 'Staking Auction', considers Bitcoin that has lost its private key, allowing participants to deposit quantum-resistant Bitcoin and auction the collateral in the event of an attack. The third proposal, 'Satoshi Auction', initiates an auction during existing Bitcoin transactions without prior deposits, where the highest bidder receives the Bitcoin while the others lose their bid amounts. Fields believes that these methods can increase the cost of attacks and deter theft attempts. However, there are still challenges to address, such as collateral ratios and auction rules. Evaluations of the threat posed by quantum computers vary; some estimate that they could decrypt Bitcoin private keys under certain conditions, while other analysts believe they will not pose a threat to network survival.
