My friends ask me when to buy bitcoin…
- There are two perfect times to buy BTC: right now or never.
- I have my way of doing it, but everyone must make their own decisions.
This has been happening to me for over 7 years. Once I entered the world of Bitcoin, the question became part of my daily life. Is it a good time to buy bitcoin? When should I buy? Is it going to go up? But more than a price, it seems they are really looking for something else.
At first, I tried to rationalize my answer, to engage in a logical dialogue with my interlocutor that would lead us to an apparently definitive and reasonable conclusion to answer the question. But little by little I realized that there was no correct answer. Or at least, not in line with their expectations.
It’s not a new question. In fact, I think those of us who have been around this market for several years have heard some version of it hundreds (if not thousands) of times.
Would you buy now? / Do you think it will go down more? / Would it be better to wait? Or its more radical variant, which comes with a strange answer included: I’m waiting for it to reach a certain price.
Just today I read a thread on X that reminded me of this: the user described a conversation with a friend who was waiting for bitcoin to drop again to buy. When asked about his target price, the friend replied that it was $60,000. But he didn’t stop there. If it fell to that level, he would wait again for $50,000 and later for $40,000.
My conclusion from that story is the same as the tweeter’s: his friend was not waiting for a price. He was waiting to feel secure.
The problem is that this moment will probably never come. Because when you wait for the perfect moment, your expectations are always greater than reality.
That reminds me of when someone asks me when is the perfect time to have children. I always tell them that there are only two perfect times: right now or never.
I know there will be those who complain about that right now. And rightly so. How can I tell someone to buy bitcoin now if I don’t know what the price will do tomorrow? What if it drops 20%? What if it drops 50%? What if this is precisely one of those moments that, viewed in a few years, will seem absurd to buy?
The truth is that I don’t know. That’s why I opened this article with the mention of a fragment from the Argentine comedians Les Luthiers. Although it’s a joke, that short passage reflects a great truth: there are questions so complex that, in the end, we can only answer with yes or no. Or in our extended case, with two opposing absolutisms.
That is precisely the issue.
When I say right now I’m not saying that today’s price is the best possible price. Nor that bitcoin will go up from here, nor that anyone who buys today will make money tomorrow.
I’m saying something much simpler: if you want to have bitcoin, you will probably never find that moment when all the variables are aligned and you can buy completely at ease. So it ends up being easy: do you want bitcoin? Buy bitcoin.
But that or never has for me an even greater weight. Not because it aligns with the hesitations, doubts, or any reason someone has to hold back on their plan to buy BTC. Rather, I say it because if you doubt, if you are not convinced that you want to invest in something, maybe you simply shouldn’t do it.
It seems obvious, but in bitcoin we sometimes forget. There is a constant pressure to have a position. As if those who still don’t have BTC are arriving late to a party that will inevitably turn into a fortune.
As if not buying were, automatically, a bad decision. I don’t believe that. I think everyone should act according to their own decisions and convictions. According to their own conscience.
Bitcoin can be an investment that makes sense for someone and not for another person. It can be part of someone’s wealth strategy and be completely incompatible with another’s financial situation. And that’s okay. I don’t have to agree with them to respect their right to decide.
In fact, I think it’s much healthier to say I don’t want to buy bitcoin than to spend three years waiting for it to reach a certain price while, deep down, one doesn’t even know if they want to have it.
And if we look at it from the comparative perspective from a while ago: is it okay to have a child just to have one? My wife and I had ours because we decided to. We organized ourselves for it to happen and for our family planning to lead to a successful upbringing, both personally and financially. But if someone is not sure, it’s better to avoid it. Because in both cases, when everything goes well, we can continue with our lives, be happy, and eat cake.
But who do we hold responsible if everything goes wrong?
Personally, I lean towards the "right now" in my own life. I try to do DCA consistently and organized, because I believe (and I’m willing to live with my mistake if the forecast doesn’t come true) that in many years I will potentially see those fruits.
But those who live in anxiety about seeing the price daily, weekly, or monthly, it’s okay for them to look the other way. Nothing (not even bitcoin) replaces living healthily, with peace.
That’s why, every time my friends ask me when to buy bitcoin, I always tell them: now or never.
