METR: Anthropic's Model Progress Rate is Twice That of a Year Ago
AI safety research organization METR stated after an 11-week investigation into Anthropic that the rate of progress of the company's models is approximately twice that of a year ago, with advancements made in the past year equivalent to about two years prior. METR believes that as of October, much of the acceleration in research and development is due to AI, and its contribution is increasing. The acceleration mainly comes from AI-assisted human researchers rather than autonomous work. Employees using Anthropic's strongest internal model reported informally that their work efficiency is about 12 times that of when not assisted by AI. Anthropic has heavily redacted the public report, and co-founder Sam McCandlish stated that the information involves commercially sensitive content and could potentially help other companies accelerate their R&D.
