Russians Invested a Record 1.1 Trillion Rubles in the Stock Market, Incurring Losses
In the second quarter of 2026, the inflow of funds from individuals into brokerage accounts in Russia reached a record 1.1 trillion rubles, nearly double last year's volume of 0.6 trillion rubles. Despite this, private investors suffered significant losses: the Moscow Exchange Index fell by 15.4%, the total return index of stocks dropped by 14%, and the dollar exchange rate decreased by 4%. The total value of citizens' assets under brokerage services increased by 2% to 13.6 trillion rubles; however, the total damage from the depreciation of securities is estimated at 0.8 trillion rubles. Citizens purchased Russian stocks worth 101 billion rubles, but their share in portfolios decreased from 24% to 20%. Russians directed 358 billion rubles into bonds, of which 185 billion went to corporate securities and 173 billion to government bonds. A wave of technical defaults on bonds from 29 companies, in which investors invested 21 billion rubles, also became a risk factor. In 2026, Russians are directing more funds to the stock market than to banks, which is associated with declining deposit rates. Major banks in Russia lost a record 2.4 trillion rubles, facing a cash outflow.
