Kiev Homes Prepare for Extended Blackouts

LUN analyzed energy-independent apartment buildings in Kiev, revealing how residential complexes can prepare for power outages. The study showed that elevators, pumps, heating, and lighting systems can operate autonomously in these buildings. Generators, batteries, inverters, and solar panels are used to ensure autonomy. For example, the OSMD "Solomenskaya 15-A" uses a diesel generator and batteries, but no solar panels. The residential complex "Southern Gates" provides autonomy for 6-8 hours thanks to a battery system with a capacity of 612 kWh. The age of the buildings ranges from 1973 to 2025, but the level of energy independence depends on the modernization of systems rather than just the year of construction. Nine out of ten surveyed buildings are managed by OSMD, most of which were built in the 2000s to 2020s. The importance of comprehensive energy modernization of homes is increasing, as it affects comfort and property value. Apartments in energy-modernized buildings in Lviv can cost $350-500 more per square meter.
