Hyperliquid OI Hits $14.3B as HYPE Reaches New Highs — What It Means for WEEX Traders

By: WEEX|2026/09/10 06:30:00

Hyperliquid is entering a new phase of growth. Open interest on the on-chain derivatives platform has climbed to $14.3 billion, HYPE has hit a new all-time high, and new financial products are beginning to build on top of its trading infrastructure. At the same time, regulatory attention is rising, with the CFTC exploring how platforms like Hyperliquid could fit within a compliant market structure.

Here's what's driving Hyperliquid's latest momentum and why its evolution from a decentralized perpetuals exchange into a broader on-chain financial platform matters for traders.

TL;DR

  • Hyperliquid's open interest has climbed to $14.3 billion, approaching levels last seen before the October 2025 market crash, while HYPE reached a new all-time high of around $88 and was up more than 50% in September as of September 8.
  • The latest growth is increasingly coming from Hyperliquid's core crypto perpetual markets rather than HIP-3 alone. Total OI increased by roughly $3.57 billion over the past month even as HIP-3 OI declined by $119 million.
  • Hyperliquid is also becoming infrastructure for more sophisticated on-chain financial products. Renzo Finance is launching Renzo Basis on Hyperliquid, automating spot-perpetual basis trades for BTC and HYPE while keeping the strategy on-chain and self-custodial.
  • Regulation remains another important catalyst. President Trump said on August 19 that CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into the U.S. in a "fully compliant and legal fashion," though no regulatory approval has been announced.
  • For WEEX traders, Hyperliquid's latest momentum is about more than HYPE's price: rising derivatives activity, new products built on its infrastructure, and potential regulatory pathways are all testing how far on-chain markets can expand.

The Headline: Hyperliquid Is No Longer Just a DEX Story

Hyperliquid's latest numbers suggest something bigger than another rally in a DeFi token. Total open interest on the platform reached $14.3 billion on September 6, putting it within 3% of the level recorded immediately before the October 2025 market crash. HYPE responded by reaching an all-time high of around $88, giving the token a market capitalization of nearly $20 billion and a gain of more than 50% for September as of September 8.

Regulatory attention adds another layer to that story. On August 19, President Trump said CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into a fully compliant and legal manner. Selig had previously said that on-chain technology such as Hyperliquid could transform financial markets and that regulators wanted to explore a compliant path for such markets.

Taken together, however, the picture is becoming harder to dismiss as simple HYPE speculation.

The bigger question is no longer simply why HYPE is rising. It's whether Hyperliquid is evolving from a successful decentralized exchange into a broader piece of on-chain financial infrastructure.

What Is Hyperliquid, and Why Does It Command This Much Attention

Hyperliquid is a blockchain-based exchange built specifically for perpetual futures trading — contracts that let traders speculate on crypto prices with leverage, without an expiration date, all settled directly on-chain rather than through a centralized order book. What sets it apart from the crowd of decentralized exchanges is sheer scale: Hyperliquid currently holds an estimated 70% share of the entire decentralized perpetual futures market, putting it well ahead of competitors like Jupiter and Orderly Network.

21Shares recently launched Hyperliquid-linked trading products on the SIX Swiss Exchange, and Hyperliquid's associated public entity, Hyperliquid Strategies, expanded its equity purchase agreement to $2.5 billion, reportedly to support potential HYPE token buybacks. When a platform moves that much money and draws that much institutional attention, it becomes almost inevitable that regulators start asking how or whether to bring it inside the perimeter.

Why the CFTC Is Moving Now: Regulatory Definition Meets a Race Against the Clock

Timing matters here as much as intent. Congress's broader crypto market structure legislation has struggled to advance, with lawmakers divided over key provisions and a procedural vote not expected until September at the earliest — leaving a narrowing window to pass anything substantial this year. That legislative gridlock hands agencies like the CFTC outsized influence over how digital asset markets actually develop in the meantime, since regulators don't have to wait for Congress to act before shaping the rules on their own. In other words, whoever writes the first real framework for on-chain derivatives platforms sets the template everyone else gets measured against — and the CFTC appears determined not to let that opportunity slip by while lawmakers keep negotiating.

What This Means for WEEX Users

For traders watching this story unfold, the real takeaway isn't a price prediction — it's a shift in what actually moves crypto markets right now. Regulatory clarity is becoming as significant a catalyst as adoption metrics or on-chain activity, and Hyperliquid's situation is a live case study in how that plays out: a dominant platform, a specific regulatory pathway, and a level of political attention that's unusual even by crypto standards. Whether or not this particular deal closes, it signals that regulators are actively building frameworks for on-chain derivatives platforms rather than treating them as permanently outside the system.

Staying informed on developments like this matters regardless of which assets you trade, because regulatory decisions at this level tend to ripple across the broader market — shaping sentiment, liquidity, and how platforms across the industry structure their own compliance going forward.
