Hollywood Studios Ban Employees from Betting on Insider Information
Hollywood studios and production companies have issued guidelines prohibiting employees from betting on prediction markets using insider information. The rules forbid employees from wagering on events such as company earnings reports, casting decisions, and release dates, and also prohibit sharing information with friends and family for betting purposes. At least one company has established an anonymous hotline for employees to report colleagues suspected of betting. Pensket Media has updated its employee handbook to ban betting on award nominations, casting decisions, production schedules, and release dates. Columbia Law School professor Joshua Mitts noted that employers need to consider insider trading rules from an ethical standpoint, but enforcing these rules can be challenging, especially when insiders use mixers to hide their identities, as blockchain-based transactions may be "virtually untraceable."
