Franco Baresi, Milan legend and World Cup champion with Italy, has died
The football world is in mourning following the death of Franco Baresi, one of the greatest defenders in history and an eternal symbol of Milan. The former Italian libero passed away at the age of 66 after battling an illness in recent years, and his passing has sparked a wave of tributes in Italy and around the world.
Baresi was much more than a central defender. He represented an era of Italian football marked by tactical reading, leadership, personality, and an unusual loyalty: he played his entire professional career at Milan, where he became captain, a reference point, and an absolute emblem.
Wearing the rossonero jersey, he played 20 seasons, won 18 titles, and served as captain for 15 years. His figure was associated with the dominant Milan of the late 80s and early 90s, especially the team coached by Arrigo Sacchi, which revolutionized European football with its high pressing, defensive organization, and collective intensity.
Baresi debuted very young at Milan and never left. Despite standing at 1.76 meters, a short height by traditional standards for a central defender, he imposed himself with his speed, intelligence in anticipation, ability to organize the back line, and leadership on the field.
His nickname, "Piscinin," referred precisely to that physical stature. However, on the pitch, he became a dominant presence. His specialty was getting to the ball before the forward, correcting spaces, pushing forward, and leading defenses that marked an era.
At Milan, he won six Scudetti, three European Champions Cups, later renamed the Champions League, four Italian Super Cups, three Coppa Italia titles, and two Intercontinental Cups. His number 6 jersey was retired by the club in tribute to his legacy.
Baresi also had a gesture that solidified his bond with the institution: he remained at Milan even during the toughest times, including the period when the club had to play in the Italian lower divisions in the early 80s. This loyalty made him one of the greatest idols in rossonera history.
Baresi's career reached its peak in Arrigo Sacchi's Milan, one of the most influential teams in modern football. That team combined elite defense with figures like Paolo Maldini, Mauro Tassotti, and Alessandro Costacurta, along with the offensive talent of the Dutch players Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, and Marco van Basten.
Baresi was the axis of that structure. From the back, he organized the line, managed the timing of defensive plays, and made the first pass to initiate attacks. His way of interpreting the position transformed the role of the libero and placed him among the greatest defenders of all time.
In 1989, he won the Ballon d'Or, finishing behind Van Basten, and in 1990, he was named Footballer of the Year in Serie A. These recognitions confirmed the individual weight of a player who, even from a defensive position, managed to compete for prominence in an era dominated by high-profile attackers.
With the Italian national team, Baresi was part of the squad that won the World Cup in Spain in 1982, although he did not play in any matches during that tournament. Over time, he became a reference for the Azzurra and took on the captaincy in the following decade.
He was a key player for the Italian national team that reached the final of the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where Italy lost to Brazil on penalties. Baresi played in that final after recovering from an injury, showcasing his competitive character.
His name is also linked to Diego Maradona due to the clashes between Napoli and Milan, high-voltage classics during the 80s and 90s. Despite the rivalry between the two teams, Maradona always praised the quality of the Italian defender.
After one of those encounters, the Argentine star publicly praised Baresi and described him as "the best as a defender." Years later, Baresi himself returned the compliment by stating that Maradona was the toughest opponent he ever had to mark.
The death of Franco Baresi is poignant because he was a figure who transcended titles. His career represents an idea of belonging, leadership, and defensive excellence that left a profound mark on Milan, the Italian national team, and world football.
For several generations, Baresi was the model of a complete defender: fast, cerebral, competitive, and capable of transforming a team's organization from the back line. His influence also extended to footballers who shared the locker room with him and who later continued the Italian defensive tradition.
Milan will remember him as one of its greatest symbols. Italy, as one of the great representatives of a defensive school that marked the history of the game. Football bids farewell to an eternal captain.
