Every Second Russian Bank Recorded Outflow of Deposits
In July 2026, 152 out of 301 Russian banks reported a reduction in funds in term deposits. This affected every second bank against the backdrop of worsening conditions for saving funds. In June, 138 banks observed outflows, and in May — 134. Peak values were recorded in November 2025 (154 banks) and June 2024 (197 banks). Official data from the Central Bank of Russia shows a slight increase in account balances in July by 0.3% (234 billion rubles), however, the situation in the retail segment is deteriorating. The share of Russians who consider bank accounts the best form of savings has fallen to 36%, while supporters of cash have increased to 37%. Sberbank's CEO Herman Gref reported a "significant outflow" of funds in July. Over the past six months, citizens withdrew nearly 2.6 trillion rubles from deposits and current accounts, which increased the volume of cash to 21.5 trillion rubles. The decline in the attractiveness of deposits was influenced by rising tax pressure, falling real incomes, a decrease in the key rate, and rumors of a possible freeze on deposits. In the first half of 2026, the share of income from savings decreased from 10% to 4.4%. 58% of Russians do not have a financial safety net in case of income loss.
