Donald Trump to Resume White House Correspondents' Dinner After Attack That Forced Its Cancellation
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, will return this Friday to the traditional White House Correspondents' Dinner, which was rescheduled following the assassination attempt that occurred during the edition planned for April and forced the event to be canceled amid an emergency evacuation.
The gala will feature significant security measures and will mark Trump's return to an event historically charged with symbolism between the U.S. presidency and the media.
The Attack That Forced the Dinner's Cancellation
The original ceremony ended abruptly when gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the Washington Hilton, where the president's speech was scheduled.
The alleged attacker, Cole Allen, a 31-year-old man from California, faces charges including attempted murder of the president and pleaded not guilty in court. Following the attack, the event was suspended and Trump was evacuated from the location by the Secret Service.
For the new edition, authorities have significantly reinforced the security operation. The U.S. Secret Service established a wide protection perimeter in various sectors of Washington to prevent any incidents.
Additionally, the organization decided to move the dinner from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria, a hotel that previously belonged to Trump.
According to the organizers, the new venue will allow for a "more intimate" ceremony due to its smaller capacity.
What to Expect from Donald Trump's Speech
The president will finally deliver the speech he was unable to give in April. Before the attack, a strong criticism of the press was expected, although it is still unclear what tone will be chosen for this new opportunity.
The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Trump "will celebrate freedom of speech and the First Amendment alongside all of you, members of the media."
She also noted that the president "looks forward to finishing what he started before a despicable assassination attempt derailed the original event."
Weeks ago, the president himself hinted that he might modify parts of his speech. "I don’t know if I will make the same statements, rather unpleasant, at least regarding certain people, but we will know soon," he said.
A Tribute During the Ceremony
The president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Weijia Jiang, explained when announcing the rescheduling that the goal was to prevent the attack from defining the meaning of the gathering.
"We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word," she expressed. The program will maintain the usual structure of the gala and will include a performance by mentalist Oz Pearlman.
A tribute will also be paid to a Secret Service agent who participated in subduing the alleged attacker, despite having been hit in his bulletproof vest, and to the staff of the Washington Hilton, who assisted during the emergency.
Trump's Relationship with the Press
The dinner originally scheduled for April was to represent Trump's first participation in this traditional gathering since his return to the White House.
For years, the president has maintained a conflicted relationship with much of the traditional media, which he has repeatedly accused of acting with bias and even labeled as "enemies of the people."
At the same time, his administration expanded access to the press room for digital media, conservative bloggers, and influencers, altering the usual dynamics of presidential coverage.
