David Schwartz May Return to Coding for Nik Bougalis

Former Ripple technology executive David Schwartz revealed that the only reason he would return from retirement is for Nik Bougalis. Schwartz, one of the chief architects of the XRP Ledger, stated that his return to coding after leaving his position on January 1, 2026, would not depend on money or the size of the job. Nik Bougalis, a well-known engineer in the Ripple ecosystem, led the XRPL engineering team for nearly a decade and played a significant role in the development of the network's core codebase. Bougalis is also associated with three key company patents in the field of advanced cryptography. After leaving Ripple in 2022, Bougalis became the CTO of the Algorand Foundation at the end of 2025. Schwartz transitioned to a more relaxed work schedule after 13 years of continuous coding and continues to provide consultancy to Ripple. Both individuals are now involved in different blockchain ecosystems, which diminishes the likelihood of them reuniting on the same codebase. Schwartz's statement is seen as a strong expression of professional respect for a former colleague in the cryptocurrency sector.
