Critical Situation at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Offline Since August 20
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is facing a critical situation regarding nuclear and radiation safety. Energoatom reported a systemic violation of nuclear safety principles following the disconnection of external power on August 20, which led to a switch to emergency diesel generators. This marks the 27th instance of complete power loss at the ZNPP since the beginning of the war. Emergency generators are not designed for long-term operation, increasing the risk of technical failures. All power units are in a cold shutdown state, but stable electricity supply is necessary to monitor critical systems. Energoatom emphasizes that the only guarantee of safety is the complete withdrawal of Russian troops. Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, reported a local ceasefire to restore electricity supply. The Zaporizhzhia NPP, seized by Russian forces in March 2022, is not generating electricity and relies on external power lines. Russia is also using the plant as a military base, placing weapons and equipment on its territory.
