Coinbase Unveils AI Financial Accounts and Limited Wallets
Coinbase is building a financial infrastructure that grants funds and trading permissions to AI agents. The released product takes the form of a portfolio and wallet with limited permissions, and it is not a legally recognized bank account. CEO Brian Armstrong stated that they are in the process of developing AI financial accounts. Coinbase explained that in 'Coinbase for Agents', AI agents can connect to users' accounts to perform transactions and payments. Users can set the asset access, trading scope, and spending limits for the agents. The agents do not have access to the main account and operate through isolated portfolios, separating them from other assets. The x402 protocol is used for payments, and AI agents are designed to pay for API, data, and computing service fees in stablecoins. Coinbase's agent wallets can hold, transfer, and trade stablecoins and process x402 payments. Security measures include session and transaction-specific spending limits, key isolation, and transaction monitoring. Coinbase plans to provide wallets and on-chain execution capabilities to AI agents starting in 2024. According to data from the second quarter of 2026, over 99% of agent stablecoin transaction volume occurred on Base, and over 97% of agent transactions were conducted through x402. However, while Coinbase's blockchain and stablecoin infrastructure play a significant role in AI agent payments, it is challenging to interpret this as a broader expansion into the overall payment market.
