Climate Change Accelerates Expansion

Scientists say climate change is helping germs proliferate and spread northward. A 2023 study found that the northernmost case has been shifting approximately 30 miles each year, and overall cases have been increasing.

Warmer waters favor the reproduction of bacteria, and the rise in the planet's average temperature is expanding their geographic range. Coastal areas that were previously too cold now offer suitable conditions.

This phenomenon not only affects Louisiana and Florida but could extend to other Atlantic regions in the coming decades. Epidemiological surveillance and public education are essential to mitigate the risk.
