Canada Pension Plan Assets Rise to CAD 303.2 Billion in First Half, Investment Return at 9.5%
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) achieved an investment return of 9.5% in the first half of the year, primarily benefiting from the investment gains brought by SpaceX's initial public offering (IPO). By the end of the first half, the fund's net asset size increased to CAD 303.2 billion (approximately USD 217.5 billion). OTPP CEO Jo Taylor stated that the growth in performance during the first half was mainly driven by increases in venture capital equity, public market stocks, and inflation-protected asset investments. The SpaceX IPO has become one of the key factors driving the growth of OTPP's investment returns, as SpaceX has rapidly expanded in recent years through commercial launches and its satellite internet service, Starlink, attracting long-term capital from pensions, sovereign funds, and large institutional investors. OTPP is one of the largest institutional investors globally, with a long-term investment focus on private equity, technology companies, and infrastructure assets. The valuation increase brought by SpaceX's listing highlights the significant impact of unlisted tech unicorns and high-growth assets on the performance of large pension funds.
