Senator Richard Blumenthal expects that the bill on 'hellish' sanctions against Russia will be passed in the House of Representatives in September. The document has received support from Republicans. Blumenthal, a co-author of the bill, announced plans to intensify efforts to garner support in the House following Senate approval. He believes the law will be a 'powerful blow' to financing the war in Ukraine. Although Democrats generally support the sanctions, some fear it will give U.S. President Donald Trump the opportunity to impose additional tariffs. Blumenthal noted that exemptions in the bill would spare European allies from tariffs. He also urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to pressure House members to support the bill. On August 7, the U.S. Senate backed the sanctions bill against Russia and Iran, with 86 senators voting in favor and 11 against. The bill allows for the imposition of 100% secondary tariffs against countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and gas, primarily targeting China and India.
